Florida Democratic Party Chair Hails Verdicts in Ahmaud Arbery Case

November 24, 2021

Today a jury in Glynn County, Georgia found Travis McMichael, Gregory McMichael and William Bryan Jr., accused of killing 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery in February of last year, to be guilty of murder.

In reaction to these verdicts, Florida Democratic Party Chair issued the following statement:

“The jury’s verdicts in the Ahmaud Arbery trial bring an important measure of justice and some relief to those mourning this young man both in Georgia and across the nation. They also constitute a powerful statement condemning the type of vigilantism that led to Ahmaud’s demise. He was never found to have committed a crime, yet still paid with his own life for others’ assumptions about him.

“May the jury’s actions today act as a powerful rebuke to those who would take the law into their own hands and endanger, or outright end, the lives of others out of a misguided and twisted sense of justice.

“May it also inspire us to continue fighting to build a society where a young person can enjoy the presumption of innocence from both his or her peers and our courts of law, regardless of skin color or ethnic heritage. Justice demands it.

“My deepest condolences to Ahmaud’s family, his friends and his entire community. May these righteous verdicts mark the beginning of a process of healing from the grievous wound of losing him.”
